Loitering
Detects people who stay in an area longer than the time you set; spots casing and suspicious loitering early.

Loitering reports people who stay in an area longer than the time you set. ProVife tracks each person with a tracking ID, records the moment they enter the area and creates an event when the time is up. People waiting for minutes in front of an ATM, wandering in front of a closed store window or standing aimlessly at a parking lot exit are spotted early with this analytic. A person who stays motionless is recognized as a stationary object; when single notification is selected, alarms are not sent again and again for the same person. The event is recorded along with how long the person stayed in the area and is linked to alert scenarios.
How it works
Draw the area to monitor on the camera’s current frame.
Enter the dwell time in seconds; for example, a few minutes for an ATM area.
ProVife stores the entry time of each person entering the area with a tracking ID.
If the person stays in the area until the time is up, an event is created and the person is marked in the image.
Use the stationary object setting to choose whether a motionless person is reported once or at the repeat interval.
Settings
| Area | The zone where loitering is measured. |
|---|---|
| Dwell | The minimum stay required for an event, in seconds. |
| Stationary object | A single notification or repeated notifications for a motionless person. |
| Confidence threshold | The minimum confidence required to accept a person. |
| Analytics hours | The days and hours the analytic runs; for example, only after closing. |
What it produces
- Loitering event (analytics.loitering.detected): zone name and how long the person stayed in the area.
- Event image with the person marked by a red box.
- Stationary person information and tracking ID.
- The number of people currently in the loitering area on the smart panel.
What you can do with the event
- A “This area is under video surveillance” announcement over the speaker.
- Forwarding the event to the security patrol in a WhatsApp message with an image.
- Turning on ambient lighting via a smart relay to increase deterrence.
- Forwarding the event by email and MQTT to the alarm monitoring center.
Where it is used
Banking
People waiting a long time in front of an ATM booth are reported to branch security.
Retail
People wandering in front of the store window after closing are logged.
Transportation
Passengers waiting at platform ends and in front of service doors are sent to the monitoring center.

Camera placement
- Draw the area tightly around the spot where loitering is seen.
- Favor a distance at which the person’s face and clothing can be made out.
- Leave the walkway out of the area and monitor only the spot where people stand.
- Mount the camera at a height where it sees people separately even at busy hours.
