Plate reading
Confirms the plate of every passing vehicle across multiple reads and writes the vehicle owner and direction to the event.

Plate reading reads the plates of vehicles passing through the analytics area and records each plate after confirming it across multiple reads. A misread from a single blurry frame does not produce an event; a plate is accepted when it returns the same result for the confirmation count. With the plate format filter, you can accept only reads that match the standard local format. If the plate is registered, the event also shows the vehicle’s user; for example, when the vehicle with plate 7ABC123 passes, the event appears with the name Maria Smith. The License Plate Recognition screen shows the latest passes and daily counts for every access point in one place. If needed, the same scenario also measures the vehicle’s speed along with the plate.
How it works
Grab the image with Capture frame and draw the area over the lane where plates will be read.
Set the confidence threshold and the confirmation count; a high value prevents incorrect plate records.
Select the plate format: all formats, or only the standard local plate format.
Select the plates to report: all plates, or only those matching the lists.
ProVife confirms the plate across consecutive reads and does not record the same plate again before the repeat interval is up.
Optionally, turn on Also measure speed while reading plates and draw the two measurement lines.
Settings
| Area | The section of the lane where plates are read; the entire plate must stay inside the area. |
|---|---|
| Confidence threshold | How certain the system must be that the plate was read correctly. |
| Confirmation count | How many reads must repeat the same result for the plate to be accepted. |
| Plate format | All formats, or only reads matching the standard local format. |
| Plates to report | All plates, block list, not on the allow list, or allow list only. |
| Repeat interval | The time that must pass before the same plate is recorded again. |
What it produces
- Plate recognition event (analytics.plate.recognized): plate, confidence value, direction and number of plates in the scene.
- The vehicle’s user and list type, if the plate is registered.
- Event image with the plate marked by a red box and the text read.
- Latest passes and daily counts per access point on the License Plate Recognition screen.
- The vehicle’s speed in the event, if speed measurement is on.
What you can do with the event
- A critical pop-up window, audible alert and WhatsApp message for a block-listed plate.
- Opening the barrier for an allow-listed plate.
- Forwarding the plate event via MQTT to parking and accounting software.
- Finding every pass of a vehicle by typing its plate on the AI Playback screen.
- Exporting passes in the selected date range to a PDF report.
Where it is used
Residential complexes
Every vehicle passing the complex entrance is recorded with its plate and the registered resident’s name.
Logistics
Trucks entering and leaving through the warehouse gate are tracked by plate.
Gas stations
Plates of vehicles pulling up to the pump provide evidence in payment disputes.
Corporate campuses
Visitor and staff vehicles are tracked with separate lists.
Camera placement
- Position the camera to see the plate from the front or at most slightly from the side, at an angle under 30 degrees to the lane.
- Use a narrow-angle lens so the plate appears wide enough in the image.
- For night reading, check that infrared illumination lights the plate without washing it out.
- Favor spots in front of barriers and just past speed bumps, where vehicles slow down.
